Heated Hardwood Floors Toronto

Hardwood floors are some of the key amenities home buyers look for when buying a home. Whether you are installing natural wooden floorboards or engineered wood flooring, most of our underfloor heating systems can be used. Contact us now to find out more about the perfect floor heating system for your needs.

Hardwood Underfloor Heating

Floor heating is becoming more and more popular among homeowners. Our underfloor heating systems at Heavenly Heat have been researched in detail and developed for use with a variety of wooden floor options. We are also familiar with the fact that radiant heating depends on the thermal conductivity of wood. The denser and thinner the wood floors are the faster they heat-up and the more efficient the system will be. Using our thermostat to control underfloor heating systems further guarantees optimum temperature output, which doesn’t exceed 27 degrees C (81 degrees F). Our systems are engineered to be hot enough to heat your floors and room but not too hot to damage your flooring.

Electric Systems for Wooden Floors

At Heavenly Heat we recommend three systems for underfloor heating. Based on your needs and budget, when you come to us we will recommend Easy Mat, Easy Wire, or Self-Regulating Cable. Each option has its share of pros and cons.

Easy Mat

This system is made of high-quality heating cables woven into flexible strips. They work great in bathrooms, basements, sunrooms, and other rooms where warm floors lead to added comfort. The mats are available in three heat requirement strengths: 12, 15, and 20 Watt per square foot. The 12 Watt per square foot is preferred when secondary comfort heating is needed whereas 20 Watt per square foot is perfect for primary room heating.

Easy Wire

Just like Easy Mat, Easy Wire works in the same way and is perfect for basements, bathrooms, and sunrooms. Its heat requirement strengths range from 10 to 20 Watt per square foot. The 10 Watt per square foot is ideal for secondary comfort heating whereas the 20 Watt per square foot option is perfect when underfloor heating is used as the primary room heating.

Self-Regulating Cable

This third option is more advanced. It is cUL listed self-regulating parallel heating cable used for both industrial and residential applications. Just as the name implies, the cable increases or reduces the heat output based on the ambient temperature. There are no chances of the cable overheating, even when overlapped.

Wood Floor Types

While our underfloor heating systems can be used with any wooden floor finish, it is important that you take note of the type of wood flooring that is installed. This is particularly so when you consider the fact that some soft-wood flooring options may create thermal barriers and keep the heat from transferring to the floor surface.

Engineered Wood

This is a popular alternative to solid wood floors. It is manufactured to provide the same feel and look as natural wood. Engineered wood works great with various types of underfloor heating.

Solid Wood

Natural wood is a lot more expensive than engineered wood. It is available in varying densities and moisture content. The type of solid wood you have will dictate the type of underfloor heating system you end up using. With solid wood, nailing is typically required. We encourage you to get in touch with us to find out more about solid wood and for assistance with the installation of floor heating.

Thermal Conductivity

Thermal conductivity is a very important factor you have to consider when installing underfloor heating systems. To guarantee efficiency, you have to make sure the wood is as dense as possible. That way you will enjoy better thermal conductivity. Moreover, the denser and thinner the wood is, the quicker it will be for the floors to heat-up.

Engineered Wood floors

Floor Thickness

There are no set rules on the thickness of wood that can be used with floor heating. However, it is recommended that they’re no thicker than 18mm. If it is thicker than 18mm, the wood will interfere with the efficiency of the heating system.

It is also good to note that wider boards have better ‘movement’ than the narrow ones. At Heavenly Heat we recommend a thickness to width ratio of between 7 and 11. This means if the thickness is 16mm and the width is 160mm, the ratio will be 10. That is ideal.

If you plan on installing underfloor heating, it is important to consult your wood floor supplier about the suitability of your selected wood with floor heating. Our team at Heavenly Heat will also be happy to offer you any assistance you may need. Give us a call now for more information.

Moisture Content of Wooden Floors

Wood absorbs humidity from the surrounding. If the moisture content in the environment is high, the wood will absorb more moisture. If you lay wood flooring that has a high moisture content in a dry room, the wood will dry up leading to shrinkage. As a result, the floor may become noisy.

Humidity

When you install wood flooring in a house with higher humidity than the wood’s moisture content, the flooring may expand. Underfloor heating doesn’t affect humidity. You should always speak with your flooring supplier to make sure the wood flooring has the correct moisture content that matches the moisture content of the room it will be installed in.

Floor Temperature

The temperature of wooden floors must never exceed 27 degrees C (81 degrees F). At Heavenly Heat we have thermostats that will guarantee this temperature is never exceeded.

Installation

Our team will help with the installation of electric floor heaters. We oversee the project so that you enjoy the much-deserved peace of mind. Our team will also leave an expansion gap and it will be hidden using skirting boards.

Underlay

We always recommend an underlay so as to optimize the heat output and efficiency of the underfloor heating system as well as to prevent the heat from escaping downwards. Underlays also serve as effective moisture barriers.

Limits of Heat Transfer

With wooden floors, we always recommend meeting these limits.

RSI 0.15m2 K/W (Unless stated otherwise)

What Our Clients Say

As a DIY, I really appreciated the snow melting cable from Heavenly Heat because it is so heavily jacketed I had no trouble with damage, testing the cable before and after proved that it withstood whatever it had to during installation. I love that it has a built-in return connection; meaning the cable doesn’t have to make the “run” back to the relay panel – this made the install so much easier.

Amazing product! We installed easy mat in a family room. The family room was part of an addition that was on a slab so the room was extremely cold especially in the winter. We used the mat under pad and carpet and it heats up in minutes. We are thrilled with how this product performs.

Ordered floor heating cable. Works well. A great solution for an odd shaped space and the price is great. We installed it in a bathroom floor that is above and unheated garage. Just the right solution.

It was a pleasure dealing with Heavenly Heat during home renovation project. Customer support was excellent, advising on how-to (I hired electrician at the end to install the system at the end, but still they were very helpful). Over all very positive experience.

Awesome floor heat system. I have installed Heavenly Heat as well as a couple other brands and this one for the price cannot be beat. It also comes with extras that the more expensive systems do not come with such as the alarm to let you know if you have damaged the cable during installation. The thermostat takes a bit of time to learn and is not as easy, but once you figure out how to program it, its no problem. Will definitely buy again. The floor is already nice and warm.

Good quality and much cheaper than many heating cables out there. No problem at all. I didn’t use the installation strips but bought uncoupling membrane. It makes it much easier to install since you can remove the cable and move them closer. Keep in mind you cannot cut your cable. There is some trial and error until the coverage is perfect with your cable length. Thermostat works well too and is programmable with many options.

An awesome heating system, we used it in our bathroom renovation project; and honestly, after hours of research I couldnt find anything else even near the same quality for the same price. Would absolutely reccomend.
