What Are Heated Concrete Floor Systems?

Heated concrete floors are engineered to provide consistent and energy-efficient heating throughout your home. Unlike forced air heating, these systems use radiant heat, ensuring even temperature distribution. Electric heating cables or hydronic systems are embedded in the concrete, transforming your floor into a large, efficient radiator. These systems are compatible with various floor surfaces, from tile to wood. By incorporating thermostat options, you can easily control the temperature to suit your comfort, reducing heating costs significantly.

Benefits of Heated Concrete Floors

While it was once used primarily in industrial settings, polished concrete floors are pretty common in home renovations as well as new-building projects all over the world. The reason polished concrete flooring is so popular is because it is hard-wearing and quite easy to clean. It also adds a sense of modernity and luxury to a living space.

In addition to the impression they create, concrete floors are the perfect choice when it comes to underfloor heating. These floors have a high thermal mass which makes them ideal for heating using underfloor heating systems. Unlike other flooring materials, concrete floors heat up quickly and retain most of the heat they absorb. This is the top reason why heated polished concrete floors are perfect for improving the warmth and comfort of a home.

Are Heated Concrete Floors Suitable for All Rooms?

Ever wondered if heated concrete floors can fit into any space? The answer is a resounding yes. From sprawling living rooms to intricate basements, our systems can be customized to match all sizes and shapes. These systems are ideal for rooms where warmth is essential, providing an energy-efficient heating solution. Thanks to advanced technology like electric systems and radiant heating, even unconventional spaces can enjoy consistent, comfortable warmth. Plus, our installations ensure minimal heat loss and efficient energy use.

Choosing the Right Floor Heating System for Your Needs

Choosing the right floor heating system involves considering your space, budget, and preferences. A radiant heating system offers consistent warmth, ideal for concrete floors. Electric systems are cost-effective, using thermostats to regulate temperature. Hydronic systems use water heated by a boiler, running through pipes for even heat distribution.

For energy efficiency, insulation and proper installation are crucial. The floor covering also affects heat transfer; options like laminate and tile can optimize warmth. Each space is unique, so assessing these factors ensures optimal comfort and efficiency.

What Are the Best Heating Systems for Large Spaces?

Large open spaces require a heating solution that’s both efficient and unobtrusive. At Heavenly Heat Inc., we specialize in radiant heating systems designed for expansive areas. Radiant floor heating provides consistent warmth by distributing heat evenly across the floor, avoiding the pitfalls of forced air systems, which can cause drafts and uneven temperatures.

Our electric systems use heating cables embedded within the concrete, ensuring quick heat-up times and superior energy efficiency. These systems are ideal for commercial spaces and large residential rooms, providing a seamless integration with the existing floor surfaces and maximizing comfort throughout the property.

Maintaining Your Heated Concrete Floors for Longevity

Maintaining the longevity of your heated concrete floors involves regular upkeep and attention to detail. These systems, particularly electric ones, require checking the thermostat settings and ensuring the heating cables remain intact. Over time, floor surfaces can develop minor wear; promptly addressing these can prevent larger issues.

Additionally, monitor for any heat loss by inspecting the insulation boards. By keeping an eye on these aspects, your radiant floor heating system will continue to provide efficient warmth, enhancing your house’s comfort and reducing electricity bills.

Can Weather Affect Heated Concrete Floors in Toronto?

Toronto’s fluctuating weather presents unique challenges for heated concrete floors. In winter, when temperatures drop, an electric system efficiently maintains warmth throughout your house. These systems provide quick heat up times, especially beneficial during cold snaps.

Convection within heated floors ensures even heat distribution, reaching all corners of the room, including areas near walls and ceilings. This consistent warmth reduces the need for other systems, enhancing energy efficiency. Additionally, effective insulation minimizes heat loss, making it a cost-effective solution.

Types of Concrete Floor Finishes

Concrete is very versatile. It can be installed as a flooring material in many ways.

Polished concrete pour

This is the most common form of concrete flooring. It involves the pouring of a deep layer of concrete into position. It is then polished after it cures.

Polished concrete leveler

With this floor, a thin layer of self-leveling liquid is added to an existing subfloor. Once it dries up it is polished.

Polished concrete overlay

This involves the installation of a thin layer of polished concrete overlay over an existing damaged concrete floor.

Best Underfloor Heating System for Concrete Flooring

A polished concrete floor is the perfect candidate for radiant floor heating because of its heat-retention properties. It heats up fast and retains the heat for longer thus reducing the strain on the underfloor heating system.

Electric Systems

When installing a concrete floor as part of a new building, we have several electric heater choices for you to pick from. The system is basically installed within a 2 to 4-inch layer of concrete. The slow heat-up and cool-down time make it the ideal choice for rooms that are used constantly.

The electric underfloor heating system is the perfect choice when you want to heat existing concrete floors or subfloors. The system offers a low-profile installation and has minimal impact on the floor build-up.

Suitable for any Project

Radiant heated concrete flooring is perfect for new-building projects as well as remodels.

New-Building Projects

In most cases, polished concrete is fitted as part of a new-build construction project. This is because at this point its depth can be considered during the design stage. When used in new-building projects, the heating cables can be installed directly within the concrete before it cures. This leads to an efficient as well as hassle-free installation.

Remodeling Existing Concrete Floors

Concrete floors already in place? No problem. We can install radiant floor heating systems directly over your existing concrete. Using electric heating cables and an uncoupling membrane, we ensure efficient heat transfer. The process involves applying a leveling compound to create a smooth base. This method is cost-effective, quick to heat, and compatible with various floor coverings, including tile and wood. Our systems provide luxury warmth and are controlled by advanced thermostats to maintain the perfect temperature in any room.

If you are planning a renovation project that features concrete subfloors and you wish to install concrete floor finishes, electric underfloor heating systems may be the best choice. However, before you get started, you need to calculate if the existing structure will be able to support the added weight of concrete. You also need to make sure there is proper insulation.

Cost of Heating Polished Concrete Floors

While the initial installation cost may be a tad high, once the system is installed, underfloor heating will save you a lot of money on your heating bills. This is all thanks to the fact that the system is energy-efficient.

The overall cost of installing an underfloor heating system with polished concrete floors will depend on several factors. The main factors that affect the overall cost include the size of the project, the location, the quality, and the materials of the subfloors as well as the structural strength of the project.

If you have existing concrete floors, getting them polished may cost you about $5 per square foot. This cost will, however, rise significantly if you are doing a new concrete flooring pour. If you are installing a new underfloor heating system as part of the project, the overall cost will be about $12 per square foot. You also have to add the cost of buying your preferred underfloor heating system as well as the accompanying insulation and thermostat. How Does Radiant Floor Heating Work with Concrete Floors?

Radiant floor heating systems integrate seamlessly with concrete floors, using electric heating cables or hydronic systems to produce radiant heat. The heat transfer from these systems warms the concrete, which then radiates warmth evenly across the room. Unlike forced air systems, radiant floors provide quick heat up times and efficient heat distribution, minimizing heating costs.

Proper installation includes placing insulation boards beneath the heating elements to reduce heat loss and improve efficiency. Additionally, using an uncoupling membrane helps protect the heating system and ensures long-term durability.

Installing Radiant Heating with Concrete Floors

The installation process of heated concrete floors varies depending on the system being installed. To get the best results, it is always wise to work with an experienced team of professionals who have reviewed various products and know what will work best for you.

Floor heating systems should be installed with insulation. This will help reduce heat loss as well as enhance the overall energy-efficiency of the system. With that in mind, the first step must always be the installation of insulation. Depending on the heating system that is being installed, the cables will be laid or suspended on the insulation boards. The underfloor heating system must never be turned on while the installed concrete is curing as that may cause damages. When it is dried completely, the concrete can then be polished.

At Heavenly Heat, we are committed to providing you with the best solutions for underfloor heating. Contact us today for advice on the best solution for your concrete floors. Our team will help with the installation.

What Our Clients Say

As a DIY, I really appreciated the snow melting cable from Heavenly Heat because it is so heavily jacketed I had no trouble with damage, testing the cable before and after proved that it withstood whatever it had to during installation. I love that it has a built-in return connection; meaning the cable doesn’t have to make the “run” back to the relay panel – this made the install so much easier.

Amazing product! We installed easy mat in a family room. The family room was part of an addition that was on a slab so the room was extremely cold especially in the winter. We used the mat under pad and carpet and it heats up in minutes. We are thrilled with how this product performs.

Ordered floor heating cable. Works well. A great solution for an odd shaped space and the price is great. We installed it in a bathroom floor that is above and unheated garage. Just the right solution.

It was a pleasure dealing with Heavenly Heat during home renovation project. Customer support was excellent, advising on how-to (I hired electrician at the end to install the system at the end, but still they were very helpful). Over all very positive experience.

Awesome floor heat system. I have installed Heavenly Heat as well as a couple other brands and this one for the price cannot be beat. It also comes with extras that the more expensive systems do not come with such as the alarm to let you know if you have damaged the cable during installation. The thermostat takes a bit of time to learn and is not as easy, but once you figure out how to program it, its no problem. Will definitely buy again. The floor is already nice and warm.

Good quality and much cheaper than many heating cables out there. No problem at all. I didn’t use the installation strips but bought uncoupling membrane. It makes it much easier to install since you can remove the cable and move them closer. Keep in mind you cannot cut your cable. There is some trial and error until the coverage is perfect with your cable length. Thermostat works well too and is programmable with many options.
