Types Of Radiant Floor Heating

There are a three types available for you to choose from radiant floor heating for your home. If you are unsure of what types are available, we will go over them below to help provide you with a better idea. Of course, it is important that you review the different types of floor heating available as one option may be better for you than the next.

Electric Radiant Floors

Electric radiant floors are a common option, but not the most common floor heating option. This type of system involves a mats that are placed on the subfloor. These mats are used in conjunction with insulation and provide heat to the home.

Typically, the mats are stapled to the subfloor and a layer of concrete is placed on top of the mats and then the traditional floor is laid down on top. These types of systems are often used in areas of the home where a new addition has been added and that flooring does not have a heated floor.

Air-Heated Radiant Floors

Air-heated radiant floors are sometimes used in different settings, but they are not solely relied upon because they do not offer good heat throughout the home. The reason behind this is because the air is not able to hold the heat as well as other options, which means that when a home NEEDS the heat, it is not always available as intended. Air-heated radiant floors work well for minimal heating needs and in applications where other methods are used to heat the home.

Hydronic Radiant Floors

Hydronic radiant floors are one of the most commonly installed types and it is likely that this is what will be in your home. Hydronic, meaning liquid, is a system that is cost efficient and uses a series of pumps that send water throughout tubes underneath your floor.

The water that flows through the tubes goes through a boiler, which heats the water and thus warms the floor within your home. The type of pattern used for the tubes is up to your contractor and the design of your current floor.

Hydronic radiant floors will disperse even heat throughout your home and you never have to worry about the floors getting too hot.

Which Type of Radiant Floor Heating is Best?

It all depends on your need within your home. Hydronic radiant floors are usually the best because they are cost effective, however, electric radiant floors are also a good option for your home, but may cost more.

It is best to avoid air-heated radiant floors as they can be ineffective, especially for home that need to rely on the heat to warm the home itself or throughout the night.
